Is sushi healthy?

The lovely Jo Travers, author of The Low-Fad Diet & a professional, evidenced-based nutritionist based in London, chatted to Sushi Everything about the nutritional benefits of sushi, if ‘sushi high’ is a thing, & why you need to make sure you order a seaweed salad alongside your sushi.

Nutritionist discusses sushi health benefits

*Is sushi healthy? What are some of the nutritional benefits?

It can definitely be healthy! Particularly the omega 3 from salmon which is important for brain and gut health. Also fermented foods like natto, although not everyone's cup of tea, is full of probiotics which are fantastic for the gut.

*Some people (myself included) experience a 'sushi high' after consuming it - why does this happen / what is the reason some people are almost addicted to sushi?

I think anything that we like can do this - I get it with stinky cheese! There's nothing specific about the nutrients that can make this happen.

*Sushi can be quite carb heavy - for those watching their carb intake, what kind of sushi do you recommend?

I agree. Also, unfortunately the rice is white, which is not great for blood sugar. Ideally stick to around a fist-size portion of rice at a time, so you might want to have some sashimi along with your maki rolls. Additionally, sushi is low in vegetables so make sure you order a seaweed salad alongside to get some micronutrients.

*Finally, which is your favorite sushi & why?

Definitely tuna sashimi with some wasabi. I love the texture, flavour and colour of it.
